Biogas and Biomethane in Serbia by 2030 – Energy from Waste for Sustainable Development

Dear members, partners, and collaborators,

We are pleased to invite you to the conference “Biogas and Biomethane in Serbia by 2030 – Energy from Waste for Sustainable Development,” which will take place on March 13, 2025, at the Metropol Palace Hotel in Belgrade.

This conference brings together leading domestic and international experts, representatives from institutions, industry, and academia. Organized in partnership with the German Biogas Association – Fachverband Biogas e.V., it is part of the Chamber and Association Partnership Program between the German Biogas Association and the Serbian Biogas Association, supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

Why are we organizing this conference?

The biogas and biomethane sector in Serbia is at a turning point. On one hand, there is significant potential for energy production from waste and improved organic waste management. On the other hand, market conditions, regulations, and business models require a clearer vision and support for sustainable growth. This conference will gather key stakeholders to open a dialogue on the future of biogas and biomethane in Serbia.

Key Challenges and Discussion Points

Biomethane has been recognized as a key component of the energy transition, yet its development and integration into Serbia’s energy system are still in the planning phase. The conference will address critical questions and provide answers that are essential for the sector’s progress:

  • How can we accelerate biomethane development in Serbia and ensure its full integration into the energy mix?
  • What legal and regulatory frameworks are necessary for establishing a biomethane market?
  • How can the government support the sector and enable its long-term sustainable growth?

Biogas has already proven to be one of the most effective solutions for organic waste management and greenhouse gas reduction. However, a systematic approach is needed to integrate biogas plants into circular economy policies and waste management strategies.

  • Objectives of the Conference
  • Connecting experts, institutions, industry leaders, and academia to define key steps for sector development.
  • Analyzing European best practices and exploring opportunities for their application in Serbia.
  • Raising awareness of the sector’s importance for the economy, energy security, and environmental protection.
