We were delighted to organize the panel “The Future of Biogas – Response to Ecological Imperatives” at the EU Delegation booth, as part of the program of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Belgrade. The panel featured members of the Board of Directors of the Serbian Biogas Association, pioneers, and experts in biogas in Serbia: Mr. Goran Knežević, Prof. Dr. Đorđe Đatkov, and Mr. Dušan Dobriković, while the discussion was moderated by Ms. Lidija Zelić, Managing Director of the Serbian Biogas Association.
Panel participants analyzed the current state and potentials of the biogas sector in the Republic of Serbia, identifying key directions for further development and strategies for achieving energy sustainability. Political support frameworks for the biogas sector were discussed, including the analysis of incentives and strategies to promote sector growth, as well as the possibilities of adapting existing policies to new challenges.
Special emphasis was placed on ecology, as biogas, among all renewable energy sources, most significantly contributes to environmental protection and solves the problem of organic waste disposal. Given the small number of sanitary landfills in Serbia, and the inability to ecologically dispose of organic waste, biogas plants have emerged as an ideal solution for this pressing ecological problem.
It was concluded that biogas has the brightest future among renewable energy sources in Serbia. The panel ended with a clear message that biogas is the future of green energy, as it effectively addresses two key problems of modern society – organic waste disposal and energy dependence.
